South China Sea Conflict, US Nuclear-Powered Warship to Dock In Vietnam
The United States nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan will stop at the port city of Danang in Central Vietnam on Sunday, June 25, 2023.
This is a rare visit by US warships to the Southeast Asian country due to tensions with Beijing in the China Sea South, which are still high.
The ship will arrive on Sunday afternoon and stay in Danang until June 30, said a spokesperson for Vietnam's foreign ministry, as reported by local media on Friday, June 23, 2023.
The spokesman did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
The USS Ronald Reagan's visit is the third for a US aircraft carrier since the end of the Vietnam War.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt stops in Vietnam in 2020 to mark the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.
This year, Washington has sought to improve its formal ties with Vietnam amid Hanoi's frequent disputes with Beijing over the boundaries of the South China Sea.
China claims the waters almost entirely, including the exclusive economic zone of Vietnam and other countries in the region.
