Attended by Kim Jong Un, North Korea Defense Strategy Preparation Meeting

North Korea held a meeting, which was also attended by Leader Kim Jong-un, to determine diplomatic and defense strategies "in the face of changes in the international situation", reported North Korean media KCNA, as quoted by Reuters Saturday, June 17, 2023.

The series of meetings are being held by the ruling party, the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), starting Friday, the North's state news agency said.

WPK said on this occasion that it would also review North Korea's economic projects during the first half of this year.

The meeting is expected to last for several days.

North Korea on Thursday fired two short-range missiles in waters east of its territory. The action came less than an hour after North Korea warned that it would take action over joint military exercises held hours earlier by South Korean and US troops.

North Korea stressed that the exercises by the two countries' troops increased military tensions. In May, North Korea unsuccessfully attempted to launch a spy satellite. The launch was the first since 2016.
